Community & Service

Community and Service

Service learning is an important part of the International Baccalaureate Organization's (IBO) philosophy and is consistently present throughout LVA's program. Motivated by students and supported by the entire LVA community, LVA students are taught that they are never too young to make a difference. Visit our Links to Community Websites page for local Community and Service opportunities. Read below to learn how service learning plays an important role in the LVA curriculum.

Community and Service Requirements for
MYP Students in Grades 6-10

In grades 6-10, students are required to devote a minimum hourly requirement to Community and Service as outlined below:

  • Grade 6 - 10 hours
  • Grade 7 - 20  hours
  • Grade 8 - 30 hours
  • Grade 9 - 40 hours
  • Grade 10 - 50 hours

Some of these hours are incorporated into the Middle Years Programme (MYP) curriculum. It is our intention to instill in our students a sense of initiative and ownership in regard to local and global issues. Click on the link below to view an exciting project that our MYP students will be supporting this year and to learn how you too can become involved!

Community and Service Requirements for
DP Students in Grades 11 and 12

Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) is a required component of the Diploma Programme (DP) that is designed to educate the whole person and foster responsible, compassionate citizens. The CAS component encourages students to share their energy and special talents with others. Students may, for example, participate in theatre or musical productions, sports and community service activities. Students should, through these activities, develop greater awareness of themselves, concern for others, and the ability to work cooperatively with other people. To learn more about the CAS program visit the CAS page on the IBO Diploma Programme website.
